Smile Makeover

Questions to Ask When Considering a Smile Makeover

A smile makeover is a great way to transform teeth and gums so they appear more aesthetically pleasing. Oral health and function can also be improved and re-achieved if lost. That said, it can be helpful to get familiar with the process and what it entails prior to getting started.

Smile makeover questions

Outlined below are a few questions that should be asked when considering a smile makeover. It can be helpful to review the answers prior to starting the process.

What procedures are involved?

Depending on the individual's needs, there may be various procedures required or recommended. When there are missing teeth, tooth replacement will be recommended via dentures, bridges or dental implants. If the teeth are still intact but in bad shape, then varying restorations may be a good option. These include onlays, fillings, dental crowns or veneers. Some individuals require a smile makeover to address minor imperfections such as stained teeth or small chips. Teeth whitening or sealants may also be recommended.

How long will the process take?

The smile makeover process varies for each individual. Those who have missing or crooked teeth may have to undergo a few months of treatment, while others with minimal imperfections may only need one or two appointments to complete their smile makeover. For the most part, the entire smile makeover process should not extend past a year, unless it includes teeth straightening or multiple dental implants.

Are there benefits?

There are many benefits that come with the smile makeover process! Outlined below are a few:

  • Improved oral health
  • Better appearance
  • Boost in confidence
  • Happiness

There may be patient-specific benefits that come with a smile makeover, based on the individual's needs, goals and desires. An evaluation may be required in order to identify further benefits.

Are results permanent?

For the most part, the results from a smile makeover are permanent. Dental restorations, such as crowns and fillings, are meant to last forever, though they may become damaged over time. Dental implants also act as a permanent replacement, as they are embedded within the jaw. Teeth straightening treatments are designed to shift the teeth permanently, though everyone's teeth shift over time.

Whitening agents do provide long-lasting results, but the teeth naturally get stained, and whitening may need to be repeated. Dentists can provide solutions and preventive care to help keep the results from smile makeover procedures long-lasting and intact. Such measures include dental sealants or a retainer to maintain straightness.
